Virginia Rewind

Last weekend, I took a very short trip to Virginia. Scott was in Ohio at a convention and I thought it would be spectacular to visit a few friends.

Friday night, I had dinner with Maria and Chris at a lovely French restaurant in Reston. Saturday morning, I drove to Charlottesville to see my friend SixofClubs, her husband, the house (Mount Crumpit) and her baby Elizabeth (The Bean). It was fantastic but was far too short. I was flying out at 6 in the morning and needed to drive through some serious storms to get back to Tyson's Corner and they had house stuff to do.

Cutest baby evah!

Webcam-O-Rama

My boss at Disney wanted me to get a webcam and be able to conduct meetings "live" with the crew in North Hollywood. It really hadn't crossed my mind until today when my friend Six of Clubs asked me to help her test AIM video functionality. She was going to send video of the baby to her in-laws - makes sense. From a work perspective, it's a little disconcerting that I'll have to look decent for all calls with the team going forward.

The webcam I have is a few years old and certainly not that sophisticated. Scott had it lying around for me to try out. It works decently so I ordered a new one courtesy of Disney. It's the most super-duper cam I could find and dammit, it better make me look good even when it's the end of the day, I'm frazzled and don't feel good. (Although,
[info]meredith  always looks fantastic in hers - why is that??)

Missing in Action

I've really been remiss in posting here. It's hard to keep up with Facebook and this space. I have a lot of old friends I've found on Facebook so as much as I hate that medium, I like keeping up with my friends who seem to have become Facebook-o-philes. I'm going to try to keep up with this more regularly, even though things in my life aren't very exciting (to me, anyway). I still work 2 full-time jobs (Disney and at the hospital), I still travel a bit (no where very exciting) and I dream of going all over the world.

For now, I'll live vicariouly through
[info]vilasy who has been some remarkable places and who's blog has really taken off since I began reading her a few years ago.

Although it's not very exciting, a photo I took in NYC last weekend when I traveled down to help my friend Laura with a show.

I Want to Go Back

It's cold, it's raining and it's dreary/miserable in New England right now. I want to go back on vacation, back to St. Martin.

My vacation was incredible, the weather gorgeous, it was relaxing and fun. Spent time with some of my favorite people.

::sigh:: I want to go back.

Heart Weekend

I really dislike Valentine's Day. It's commercial, it's a gimmick and why would you not tell someone you love them all the time (through actions) all year long? Still, I'm very appreciative of the spectacular things I was given. Scott wanted to show me how much he appreciated everything I've done for him lately - he's had surgery and a lot of follow-up.

To celebrate the event, I got absolutely gorgeous flowers at the office Friday:

I got a decadent gift card to Coach where I was able to find something I wanted in about a nano-second:

And to top it off, my new 9" mini computer arrived today. It will be ideal when I head to St. Martin the first week of March. I'll be able to get on the internet, read mail, play games but not get sucked into real work - not that Laura is going to allow me to do that anyway.

Now back to reality - back to work.

My friend Laura always manages to find the most interesting things on the "net."  She's also the one I go to if I can't find something I'm desperately looking for - and she finds it. Keep in mind, I'm not a slouch when it comes to surfing and finding things but she really takes it to a new level.

She sent this to me a few days ago, knowing how much I like Nikon's. Granted, I would rather have the real thing but this is incredibly clever.

More Snow in New England

I'll admit, I do like the snow. It comes from having been deprived for the first 3.5 decades of my life while living in Louisiana. When it's fluffy and not accompanied by ice, it's beautiful and I find myself wanting to take pictures. After a while, they all look similar but here we go again. My January 18, 2009 photo of it snowing outside my kitchen window.

I've never wanted to physically hurt anyone before. However, had I been within arm's length of this idiot, I would have had to harm her.

OMG, I just wanted snow.

She Listened

Elizabeth Nicole apparently heard me last night. She arrived at 2:50AM today and was only 7lbs 2oz.  A perfect size for a little baby girl. (What do those ultrasounds know?) Yay!

Hurry Up, Elizabeth!

My friend Francis is having a baby right now (or may have already). Elizabeth Nicole was due yesterday and being stubborn, wasn't close to coming to the world. Last week, she was 8 1/2 lbs and her head is in the 90+ percentile. This week, I'm sure she's larger so the doctor felt it was time to induce labor.

This is the first baby for her husband and her and I know she's scared to death and excited. Hurry up, Elizabeth. Mommy is probably tired by now.

I have an obsession with taking photos while I'm driving. Okay, not the safest thing in the world but I love the photos showing what's in front of me. Sometimes that's a better memory of where I've been - just getting there. It's actually [info]meredith's fault for getting me hooked on it with some of her great shots over the years I've known her. (9 or 10 years?)

Merry Merry Happy Happy

Spending Christmas in Louisiana is always a mixed blessing. I spend a lot of time cooking in my friend Mike's big kitchen and that's always enjoyable and relaxing in some weird way. This year I cooked for 14 people including all of his family, my brother and myself.  Afterwards, I went to the nursing home and spent 5 hours with my brother feeding him his holiday meal and just watching old movies. It all makes me miss my Mother terribly. (Vilasy, you were in my thoughts too - hope you were okay)

Anyway, we had a lot of holiday fun last night and all day today. There were far too many presents, too much food and a lot of photos taken. Happy Holidays, everyone. I hope you were warm, safe and with people you love.

Wine and Cheese

Driving
When I was in California last week, we had a wine, cheese and chocolate party. I had purchased a few boxes of Ethyl M Chocolates in Las Vegas for my contribution. Ryan, who coordinated the party, brought cheese/crackers and everyone else brought wine. I'm not really wild about drinking in front of co-workers because I'm a giggler when I drink - SO not like me.

Fabrizio brought wine from Italy that he picked up when he was home the month before. It was SO incredibly dry it made my mouth pucker. There were some other wines that I had never tried before and that's always fun. Someone even brought a bottle of Cardinal Zin (owned by someone new, used to be from Bonny Doon) and it brought back a lot of memories.

There were two huge surprises for the evening. One was a wine I had never had before that I've absolutely fallen in love with. It's Malbec and is supposedly the new "hot" wine to have a parties. It's a red wine that is not dry at all but has a marvelous flavor. Argentina is where they are supposed to make the best bottles and this proved it.

The second surprise was a cheese that I've never had but fell in love with. I like goat cheese. My girlfriend Laura and I go to Legal Seafoods not only to have awesome seafood but we split a small tortilla, apple and goat cheese salad. Ryan brought an aged goat cheese called Midnight Moon. It was incredible.

We had a mini-blizzard this afternoon in Connecticut. On my way home before it got bad, I stopped and got a bottle of Malbec, some Midnight Moon aged goat cheese (thank goodness for Whole Foods) and crackers. I'm going to be just fine here, snowed in.

Back Home and Sick

I made it back safe and sound from North Hollywood. Well, maybe not sound. A lot of people were sick and out at home. Friday afternoon, I didn't feel well and by the time I got on the plane for my red-eye back east, I had a fever and felt awful. It's gotten progressively worse so that translates into my not feeling well and being grumpy.

There were a lot of pictures taken on the trip, both in Las Vegas and in NoHo.

Las Vegas Glitz

I know the title is ridiculous. After all, what is Las Vegas if not the mecca of glitz?

We flew in around 4:30PM and I decided to check-in at the airport. MGM has a desk there and I’ve never used it. She told us things might be a little crazy since tonight was the Oscar de la Hoya fight at the MGM Arena and it brought out the “stars” and the paparazzi.

At the hotel there were some people that I suspect are famous, at least they were surrounded by people and there were people taking their picture; I didn’t know who they were. There are a lot of gorgeous women in very expensive (short, short) dresses, men in suits and diamonds all around.

What caught my eye? The cars. OMG When we pulled into the valet, there were three Rolls-Royce’s and 2 very high end Porsche’s all within a few cars. I didn’t even get a chance to see what other cars were parked there. Our little rental was in good company.

The Waterbury Triangle

Similar to the Bermuda Triangle, the Waterbury Triangle is the area 5 miles on either side of Waterbury, CT. It is a proven fact (well, proven by my friend Laura and me) that no matter what time you go through the area, there will always be some type of traffic jam. Frequently, there's no indication at all what's caused the slow-down or coming to a dead stop; you just start moving again.

The phenomenon presented itself again yesterday while coming back from meeting Laura in Danbury for a movie and lunch (Quantum of Solace and Bertucci's - awesome stuff). Traffic, not so much so.

Christmas Came Early

Scott bought my Christmas present today and gave it to me so I could learn to use it. It's not that I'll have a big learning curve, I've had Nikon Coolpix for the past 6-8 years and they all function similarly. So once again, I've gotten my annual digital camera and I just love it. (13.5 megapixels is overkill but what the heck?)

Lazy Blueberry Pie

Well, I suppose it's the baker that was lazy and not the pie.

Scott wanted blueberry pie for Thanksgiving and I hate it.

My hating blueberry pie = won't eat it. Score!

I went into work at the hospital for a bit today and then came home to begin cooking the Thanksgiving dinner. When it came time to make the blueberry pie, I just did not have the energy to do the real lattice work crust. Instead, I did a lazy woman's version of weaving the strips. All in all, it looks good (if you like blueberry pie). Scott has asked if he can have pie first and turkey later. Not a chance.

Where you see the blueberry filling coming over the crust - it was actually bubbling up, not spilling out.

Bath and Memories

I've been thinking a lot about England and Ireland lately.  My Mom always wanted to go; it was her dream to travel through Great Britain. When I first went in 1998, I told her that I would check things out and take her the next year. She got sick while I was there and died a few weeks after I came back. She loved hearing about my trip while I sat beside her hospital bed and I told her I would try to go back every year just for her. It's been a few years since I've gone.

It may be on my mind because Mother's birthday would have been this coming Saturday and Thanksgiving was her very favorite holiday. So, with that bit of (impending) sadness that will wash over me the next few days, I brought out one of my favorite photos from the first trip I took. This was during the International Music Festival in Bath, England. Maybe it's time to plan another trip next year.
